Literatur: Participants are required to read some of the texts that are analysed in detail in the lecture. The relevant texts and text excerpts are collected in a reader which will be available at the beginning of the semester. In addition, participants are required to read the following texts in full: William Shakespeare, King Lear F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
Kommentar: This lecture course introduces students to key texts representing the literary tradition of the English-speaking world. We will explore periods ranging from the Middle Ages to contemporary Britain and from Puritan New England to 21st-century America. The reading of the texts and text excerpts is essential for the successful completion of the course. We will combine a close-reading approach to specific examples with discussions of the broader literary and cultural context.
