Kommentar: 2013 is the centennial of Ralph Ellison, one of the most important African American novelist. Ellison originally studied music and sculpture but was drawn into the world of literature as Richard Wright's protégé. Ellison spent seven years writing his acclaimes novel Invisible Man, which won him the National Book Award in 1952. This novel, which we will discuss in detail, gained him a place as a respected American writer and remains one of the central texts of the African-American experience. We will also explore some of his more theoretical writings on music and black culture as well as contextualize him within literary modernism and the Harlem Renaissance. There will be in-class essays on the texts. Students have to buy Invisible Man. All other texts will be made available on PAUL.
