Kommentar: Between the early 20th century and the 1960s some six million African Americans left the South for the urban North, Midwest, and West of the United States. This so-called Great Migration transformed American society and culture. European observers of US history often tend to overlook the significance of this extraordinary process. Our class aims to change this by reading the most important book in the field, Isabel Wilkerson’s 2010 nonfiction narrative The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration. We will discuss the key figures and ideas of Wilkerson’s book – and we will also draw comparisons to European migrations of the last half century. It is obligatory for course participants to buy a copy of Wilkerson’s book before the semester begins.
