Kommentar: Women have been present in philosophy since the beginning of its history. Yet it is only in the 20th century that they have claimed equality with their male counterparts on large scale. Nonetheless, most academic courses in the history of philosophy as well as on contemporary philosophical discourse still overlook women philosophers or treat them as a marginal phenomenon. As political philosophy is one of the major fields of interest for women in philosophy, it is worthwhile to complement the standard male-dominated list of its most prominent contributors with names of significant female thinkers. This course will discuss the thought of Hannah Arendt, Seyla Benhabib, Iris Marion Young, Nancy Fraser, and Martha C. Nussbaum, as exemplary for the contribution of women philosophers to the contemporary political thought.
