Introduction to Cultural Studies

Kommentar:
This course surveys the most important periods of American art in its cultural contexts. We will explore landscape paintings of the 19th century West, images from the rapidly growing cities of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, modernist painting and sculpture, mid-20th century Pop Art and the diverse American art scene of our time. No prior expertise in American art is required. We will read these paintings, sculptures, and photographs against the background of US history and culture, making connections to central issues in literary and cultural studies. Field trips to museum exhibitions may supplement the course program. Participants will be introduced to research methods in the field of American culture studies. A reading package will be available the first week of term.
