(Excerpts from) playscripts will be made available via PAUL. Participants should read the first play to be studied, Kwame Kwei-Armah's Elmina's Kitchen (2003), until the beginning of the semester.

Kommentar:
This seminar for M.A., Ph.D. and advanced Lehramt students focuses on a vibrant area of contemporary British drama which is just in the process of gaining wide theatrical recognition. We will study works by authors with different ethnic origins and agendas, always paying special attention to the ways in which they use dramatic techniques to affect their audiences. Thus, the possibilities of theatrical realisation will be integrated directly into the close reading of the play texts.
Active participation is essential in this seminar, and students will be encouraged to select texts for analysis and to take responsibility for the discussion in class themselves. Some familiarity with and interest in dramatic texts and/or theatre is a necessary basis.
