Literatur:
Our course investigates the history of American war writing, beginning with Stephen Crane’s Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage (1895) and concluding with contemporary literary narratives of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We will discuss the changing representations of military conflicts in the novel, the short story, and in journalism, concentrating on such distinct literary periods as realism, modernism, and postmodernism. Our explorations will include such works as Hemingway’s In Our Time, Norman Mailer’s The Naked and the Dead, Michael Herr’s Dispatches, and Joan Didion’s Salvador.

To prepare for this class, read Stephen Crane, The Red Badge of Courage and Ernest Hemingway, In Our Time well before the semester begins. Passing tests based on these texts will be a requirement for course credit.
