Kommentar:
This course explores American narratives of the road. Concentrating on the period between the 1950s and the early 21st century, we will discuss literary, photographic, and cinematic road trips and the images of American society and culture that they convey.
This class will conclude with a two-day conference in Bamberg, co-organized by the Chair of Literature and Media Studies at the University of Bamberg and by UPB American Studies. Students from Bamberg and Paderborn will present their research at this symposium.

To prepare for this class, acquire and read Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita (1955) and Jack Kerouac's On the Road (1957) well before the semester begins. There will be tests on these novels in the first weeks of the term. Passing these tests will be a requirement for course credit.
