Kommentar: This seminar reflects on Ireland, its international relations and the representation of Irish history, national identity, and culture from a transnational perspective. As a postcolonial state nowadays, Ireland has for centuries been characterised by emigration of Irish citizens to other countries, such as Britain, the US, Australia, Canada, and several European countries. Only recently, as a consequence of its membership of the European Union and the resulting economic boom in the 1990s, Ireland turned into a destination for migration transforming it into a multicultural society and allowing for transnational perspectives from multiple directions. In this seminar we will analyse auto-images and hetero-images of Ireland and of Irishness. In addition to the representation of the Republic of Ireland and its political, social and cultural relations to Europe and the US, a special focus will also be on Northern Ireland as well as on its relations to the Republic, Britain and Europe before and after Brexit. The seminar will include a one-day symposium with students’ poster presentations and invited guest lectures on Thursday, 27.06.2024, from 9:00-16:00. Class attendance in the first lesson and at the symposium is mandatory.
