Kommentar: In this seminar we will trace the development of gender constructions from the Middle Ages to the present time. We will study ideas of masculinity and femininity, the roles attributed to men and women by society as well as the social and political context of the respective periods. Therefore, we will examine the representation of men and women in the medieval epic poem Beowulf, in literature and cultural products of the Renaissance, the Victorian era, the twentieth and twenty-first century. In addition, we will also read works of feminist philosophy, taking Mary Wollstonecraft's eighteenth-century A Vindication of the Rights of Women as a starting point. Apart from the development from traditional Victorian gender roles to the fight for women’s suffrage during the early twentieth century, the seminar will also focus on the representation of masculinities during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The seminar will conclude with discussions of contemporary issues, for example with regard to the #MeToo movement and the implications the coronavirus pandemic has on gender roles. The course will be conducted in PANDA and Zoom. Please register for the course in PAUL. All registered students will automatically be imported to PANDA and have access to the course material. As regards organisational matters and teaching methods of the seminar, I will contact all registered students in the first week of the semester.
