Kommentar: In this seminar we will concentrate on Ireland in the 18th and 19th centuries. We will read and discuss some classics of Irish literature in the English language. Starting with Jonathan Swift's satirical poetry and his famous Gulliver's Travels, over Maria Edgeworth's The Absentee, Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray and Bram Stoker's Dracula, the seminar will consolidate students' knowledge of different literary genres and periods. However, the seminar will not only concentrate on literary developments on the Irish Isle but also on political issues of Ireland as an English colony. Thus, we will also engage with the Great Famine (1845-1849) and its fundamental social, political and cultural implications that still have wide-ranging effects on Ireland, Britain, Europe and North America until today. The course will be conducted in PANDA and Zoom. Please register for the course in PAUL. All registered students will automatically be imported to PANDA and have access to the course material. As regards organisational matters and teaching methods of the seminar, I will contact all registered students in the first week of the semester.
