Kommentar: In this seminar we will focus on the representation of children and the elderly in Anglophone (especially British and Irish) culture. We will apply key concepts of cultural studies, such as the construction of myth and of personal identity, to issues attributed to childhood and old age. As such, we will examine ideas like the proverbial innocence of childhood as well as stereotypes associated with elderly people. In order to gain alternative views on these stages in life, we will discuss a great number of different texts and visual representations from the eighteenth century to the present time, starting with poetry by William Blake and Jonathan Swift and concluding with Emma Healey's recent novel Elizabeth is Missing. Part of the credit requirements for this course is an oral presentation in class. Topics will be discussed in the first lesson. Due to the course organisation and requirements for the oral presentations, it is not possible to admit more students to this course than accepted in PAUL. The seminar starts on 10 October 2018. Class attendance in the first lesson is mandatory. Course material: Please purchase a copy of the following edition: Emma Healey, Elizabeth is Missing, London: Penguin, 2015.
