Kommentar: In this seminar we will analyse the representation of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in narrative fiction, in visual arts, graphic novels and films. We will examine challenges to narrative and visual representation arising with cognitive impairment and discuss gender issues as well as questions concerning the autonomy and social marginalisation of dementia patients. In order to analyse constructions of spaces for the elderly, such as the care home, we will refer to spatial theory, such as Foucault’s concept of heterotopic spaces. The seminar starts on 28.10.16. Class attendance in the first lesson is mandatory. Part of the credit requirements for this course is an oral presentation in class. Topics will be discussed in the first lesson. For film analysis purposes there will be extended lessons from 11:00-14:00 on two Fridays: 02.12.16 and 27.01.17.
