Kommentar: The relation between memory and identity is a key issue examined in cultural studies. In this course we are going to explore mechanisms underlying the formation of a cultural identity, national identity and personal identity and memory’s significant role in this process. We will discuss the concept of a collective memory and will analyse national traditions and cultural acts of commemoration as well as sites of remembrance in Britain and Ireland, for example memorials of Britain’s role in the two World Wars and the remembrance of the 1916 Easter Rising in Irish popular culture. With regard to the formation of a personal identity and the implications of memory loss on a person’s identity, we will read and discuss Emma Healey’s novel Elizabeth is Missing (2014). As the module “Projekt und Exploration” is intended to prepare you for conducting your own research project, you will work on and present a research project, which is part of the credit requirements for this class.
